Feather your nest for the holiday...

For whatever reason I felt like decorating for Easter this year. A first for everything. Halloween, Christmas, I'm on it. Easter never. But as my kids get older and cognizant of the holidays I thought it would be fun to provide a little festivity around the house and emphasize the importance of this beautiful time of year.

In doing so, I realized Easter does take on a deeper meaning for me year after year. Not sure if its in conjunction with getting older and life feeling more meaningful or that my faith grows stronger each year or that I just like the idea of a time of rebirth and renewal for myself and those I love. Whatever the reason, it calls for some celebration and a little razzle dazzle around the house. So I set out to find some tasteful decor options and here is what I came up with.

It all started with this cute-as-pie bunny I came across in a Birmingham Antique Shop. I'd had it in my head I was going to be that girl that decorates for Easter and when I saw him with that sweet gold sequin egg in his basket my mind started racing...jellybeans, candies, or just the egg. But the egg was sold separately for ten dollars.

So I made my own eggs. I spent about ten to fifteen dollars on supplies and made $100 worth of retail priced eggs in gold and silver. Have you ever noticed all the beautiful colors sequins come in? The turquoise was tough to turn down. I also thought it would be pretty to mix a bunch of colors too.

Here is what you need to make your own razzle dazzle eggs: a bag or two of styrofoam eggs, styrofoam glue, toothpicks and bowls or paper plates to scatter your sequins on. Each egg has a natural indent where you can poke your toothpick in to hold on to it while you work.

Apply the "styro" glue in sections and use your fingers to apply the first few sequins. Then use a toothpick to move them into place and when doing so the end of the toothpick becomes just sticky enough to pick up each sequins and layer them on expeditiously. You do not want to cover the egg in glue and roll it around in the sequins. This does not work well and you waste a lot of sparkle.

I thought they'd look lovely all piled inside this gold cache pot. I filled it with my favorite moss to give the appearance of a nest and so far all of the little fancy pants that come in and out of my house think they are "beeeautiful".

While I was perusing through Joanne's and Hobby Lobby for supplies and inspiration I found this cute little "Easter Greeting" sign for two dollars on sale. I made it mine by switching out the ribbon for the brown and white gingham and hung it around my folk art angel that greets you at the door. Which reminds me I added the ribbon to the bunny as well. Thought that color was perfect for her.

Also at the Hobby Lobby I came across these super cute fuzzy chicks that came three in a box for $2.50 on sale. I just happened to have found the moss and twig nest at Homegoods for $14 a few days before and my fuzzy chicks quickly had a home.

I thought they were pretty stinking cute and I'm not the only one. I hear things like "which one is the mommy and daddy?" and "what's his name, what's her name?".

I'd had this idea of making a "Happy Easter" sign out of old book pages and here is what I came up with...

I ripped out enough pages from an old book and folded them four times for added weight. I used your everyday 2 inch lettered stencil with raw umber paint for the letters. I'd never stenciled anything before and couldn't believe how easy and efficient it was. Very encouraging considering I have plenty in mind I'd like to do with them.

I'd found these cute mini paper clips in the home office section at Walmart. I'm a big fan of the clothespin. When you stop and think about it, they have many purposes around the house. One of my favorites being this particular blog post from Resolved2Worship.

She is a fabulous photographer, among many other things, and nailed up five clothespins on the wall so she can switch out family photos often and with ease. Genius. Please enjoy this post on her $10 (no I am not a typo) kitchen redo here and her many other decorating-on-a-dime projects. You will be awe inspired by this woman.

So naturally when I came across these mini ones I knew they'd come into play someday. I used them to clip the lettered pages to my favorite twine and there you have it. My vision realized and it makes me happy every time I look at it.

And lastly, I round out my Easter decorating with this beautiful vase a friend of mine gave me many years ago made by his Sister. Its one of my most cherished possessions and it has made it through many moves north, south, east and west with just a small hairline fracture on each side. The two cracks are kind of a bummer but add character. Sort of like us. We've made it through many moves and changes but we're still beautiful with just a few hairline fractures to show for it. ;-)

Love and peace to you this beautiful time of year!

well hello williams and sonoma furniture...

And here we thought you were just overpriced kitchen gadgets.

Over the weekend I was talking with my girlfriend who I do some satellite decorating for. She's stuck on a few dining chairs to complete the look of her oh so dreamy dining table. She found it on Craig's list and its an old conference room table. Great story but more on that room later. I was explaining these chairs that I think have an outside chance of working. I happen to thumb through the Williams Sonoma catalogue yesterday and bam there they were...

I was just talking about you guys! These chairs have been a long time favorite of mine so I'm very happy to see them at the forefront a.k.a. everywhere. They're versatile, handsome and over the years, the price has gone down too. Bonus. You can now find them in several color variations but I like this one best for me and darker for my friend.

Here they are in a honey color with a FAB looking bench. The table is indoor/outdoor. Don't be afraid to mix it up with your seating. Use a backless bench (options are endless, everywhere and so good looking for pennies) in front for an unobstructed view of the setting with three chairs on the back side. Get crazy with the end chairs...two oversized wing backs or two small stools. Sky is the limit and when you mix, you're not locked into a high price set. You can select and collect from everywhere.

The fabric on this bench is the answer to so many of my design dilemmas. It's called French Stripe and I'm going to find out if it is available by the yard. Fingers crossed. I love the simplicity and chicness of it (is that a word?). The simple suiting stripe will mix with any decor and you'll never tire of it. Hopefully.

Here is their farmhouse collection. Very nice and the chandelier is new and available too. I actually included this photo for the light and the floor tiles, the chairs really aren't my style but have been around forever and owned/inherited by many. Update them with some plump pillows to cozy it up or paint them a modern pop of color.

I like the white much better.

Glad to see Williams and Sonoma jumping on the gray wicker train. These are indoor/outdoor and World Market sells them for $149 here. It has been on my to do list for months to stop in and check out the quality. I promise I will get there soon because I'd love a few for some other projects I'm working on.

The wicker chairs would look mighty nice around this rustic table. Impressive.

These new rooster prints caught my eye for a modern take on country.

And these gray willow hurricanes will make for some nice ambiance this Summer. Way to go Williams and Sonoma! Which got me thinking...many of your favorite stores and catalogues often offer so much more on line. Take Target for example and their great line of mail order furniture. Some pretty swanky stuff. Same goes for good ole Walmart as they continue to wow us and update their image. For example, check out this outdoor conversation set I spotted there recently for $298! I sat in them and they are rock solid and comfortable. Pardon the iphone photo.

I'm not a fan of the matchy matchy so lose the table and pillows to your next yard sale and replace with a pair of round garden stools, drum tables, trunk or a wicker ottoman. Grab some larger outdoor pillows with an updated pattern (Ballard Designs, Restoration Hardware, Homegoods and my friend Alicia's pillows at Firmly Planted. Super fun!). Suddenly you've taken an inexpensive big box store look from blah blah to chic city.

At first glance this set is nothing special but it was the "x" motif that grabbed me as I meandered through wally world.

I could dedicate an entire post to the X. Another time. Happy Spring my friends! Soak it up!

Well I'm packing up my game and I'm a head out west...

When you're from Detroit, you'll find any excuse to sing your brother Kid Rock especially today as I board a jet plane to meet up with all my Michigan girlfriends. It's our girl Elise's birthday and eight of us are converging on LA, her new hometown. We all have ties back to our college days at Michigan State and beyond and I feel very lucky every chance we get to hoopla like this. What started out between two of us checking airfare has morphed into four days of grand plans and a sweet pad in the hills compliments of VRBO.

find a nest in the hills...

When the link came across my desk of course the first thing that came flying out of my mouth was "I love the Imperial Trellis drapes!" Super trendy print but for good reason. Its a big bold graphic kiss on the face. If you agree, make your way on over to etsy and type in Imperial Trellis and enjoy those new pillows in any color.
A shot of the kitchen. Not that we'll be cooking but a perfect backdrop to ching ching to life and some laughter.

Off the kitchen is a beautiful marble spiral staircase. Remember watching Different Strokes as a kid and wishing you had a staircase like this in your kitchen? I did. Big surprise.

give a toast to the sun, drink with the stars...

Girl's trips are wonderful and necessary from time to time. I come back a better wife, mother and friend. Just when I start hurting for my family I'm home and appreciate them all the more. But while I'm gone its a true luxury to turn off the radar and only worry about what to wear and eat. Can I get an amen on that? My souvenirs are new music for the pod, crazy fun stories to tell, good girlfriend advice and some fashion swapping. All that girly stuff that makes being one so fun. But most importantly big time laughs and memories to cherish because how often do we remember things but we'll always remember the moments. I'll choose a trip over a new frig any day.

"Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it."
-Ferris Bueller

I struggled a bit with packing because the weather this weekend is sketchy and LA in general is super casual. Regardless, I thought this little number would work for dinner at The Standard. Whataya think? I spotted her way back in NYC at Christmas but they didn't have my size (stomp my foot) but she's been on my mind ever since.

It's Sarah Jessica Parker (just in case you forgot, wink wink). She's the new face of the Halston Heritage line that I adore. The look is Michelle Pfeiffer in Scarface-esque. Check it out. It was a total splurge but to me an instant heirloom. I know my daughter will love wearing it someday. Note to self, save everything worth saving. They'll thank us.

Which brings me to my next item. Mom's old cowboy boots...

Cause I wanna be a Cowboy baby...

Aren't they great? Found them in the basement last Summer and have been rocking them ever since. Gotta love the little gifts from above just when you need it the most. They go perfect with my favorite belt from Anthropologie that you can buy here. Don't forget the belt! Takes a ho hum outfit to fabulous in zero to sixty.

Like this dress from Ruche. Belt and boots totally kick it up a notch and if you haven't shopped Ruche yet, head on over. You can thank me later. This dress is sold out (which happens often, so don't dilly-dally. If you love it, click it) and their prices can't be beat. So far so good on the quality factor too.

Well I'm off! Have a fantastic weekend and Happy St. Patrick's Day too! I'm boarding the plane with a big smile and gratitude-a-plenty for the time and opportunity. And did you hear the news of the day? They're going to start serving champagne on ALL Delta flights! Can you stand it? So big CHEERS to that my friends. I'll be back next week to share all the beautiful and inspirational things that catch my eye, a few from past Cali trips as well and my favorite taste makers from the region.

Be lovely, be safe,

p.s. AND GO GREEN!!! We'll be rooting em in beachside and making all the UCLA fans a little crazy...good times!

Around the House

Hello friends! Crazy week around these parts. My husband is many things but handy he is NOT. Lucky for me I have an amazing handy man but because he's so amazing he's in high demand and difficult to pin down. At last he showed up this week and it was just a mad dash of to do lists. So I thought I'd share. But let it be known, this is not standard protocol around my house. I'm worn out just reading this. ;-)

We kicked it off with some new trim color in my powder room. I have a love hate with this room because its right off the main hall in the center of our house and that bugs the feng shui out of me. I feel like it should be tucked away off to the side somewhere, cause after all it is the loo. I dislike walking by or welcoming friends inside and seeing the la toilette as we make our way (I realize this is a tiny problem to have in life's big picture but if we're talking about design...). I'm training my little people to please shut the door when finished. Hah, yeah right. So since I'm not moving walls or ripping out sinks anytime soon, the least I can do is shed some new paint on the subject.

Here is a shot of it before with black trim and door in the reflection of the mirror. With black trim comes high maintenace, dust and overall doom and gloom for this lover of light. It was time.

And now with a light gray green trim (Ethereal Mood by Sherwin Williams). Doesn't that look so much better?

And since we're touring the water closet, my wallpaper is West Indies Toile in charcoal and cream by Brunschwig and Fils. Its very special to me because my mother in law played a role in its existence. Much more on her later. Fabulous woman. Fabulous designer.

And while we had that paint color out I decided to experiment on my kitchen cabinets. Sort of. I proceeded with caution and chose to paint the kitchen island as it was pretty dark and time for a change. Very happy with the result. Totally digging this color and just recommended it to a friend (they're not clients, they're friends ;-)).

Here is a shot of what it use to look like painted dark in Warwick Lodge by Ralph Lauren. This is the color of all my interior doors which by the way is a great way to add depth and dimension to your home while keeping unsightly dirt and fingerprints at bay. Who wants a bunch of dirty white doors? Go for it. You won't be sorry.

While I'm in the kitchen I wanted to brag on my bar stools right quick.

I stole these at Pier One when they were on sale but didn't care much for the pattern. I found this fabric on clearance and had slipcovers made. They have been doing me right ever since. They hide dirt and stains amazingly well for being so light and wash up great in the washing machine. I've always wanted to monogram them one through four on the back ala Heather Chadduck, the insanely talented stylist for Cottage Living and now Coastal Living (can you say girl crush?).

Photo via Cottage Living

I'll investigate the monograms next week. Typically you want to have the fabric mongrammed before its cut to upholster because of the tendency to pull and stretch the fabric. Stay tuned for that.

Next on the list was my experiment with high gloss on the ceilings. This ceiling needed a touch up as I had added some can lights awhile back (easy to do on the second floor, not so easy to do on the first) and its a safe play being the upstairs hallway. Verdict still out on this one. I think the result would have been much better had we sprayed so lesson learned for next time. I will say I love the reflection of light it gives off (shocker). If only my money tree would just bloom already I could finally put some hardwoods up here and have double the reflections. Ahh well.

You're probably wondering where in the world i got the idea to paint the ceilings in high gloss? Take a look at this picture from House Beautiful. No longer does it look like just a plain ole ceiling. It's now a conversation. High gloss can be ultra chic but you have to have THE perfect walls and ceiling for it. No imperfections at all.

Photo via House Beautiful

Next up converting these five shudders I found in the attic of my old house (score!) into a screen.

These guys have been everywhere. Hanging on the walls in the living room, dining room, upstairs hall. I daydreamed about using them as a screen behind the tub in front of a big picture window when we were desinging our next house but the market crashed, or corrected itself, and decided best to stay put and be grateful for the here and now. But I could still make em into a screen and that's what I did.

Not sure where they'll end up and I'd like a fresh coat of paint and wax on them but that's for another day Scarlett. All of the above and the windows washed, roof leak repaired and oh my goodness I almost forgot, my new backdoor. Well not really, its been sitting in my garage since 2010 but like I said my handyman is hard to pin down.

Loving life that my mud room is no longer a cave and I can see who is at the door.

Couple other items of interest, this little number I picked up for $70 at my favorite antique store, The Queen of Hearts, in Alpharetta. Isn't she gorgeous in her green and gold? Hah, not! She'll make a great before and after desk for my daughter. Keep you posted on that.

And lastly remember my favorite little etsy shop I mentioned? Well this showed up in the mail this week.

A vintage set of dominoes. You're probably wondering what in the heck is she going to do with those? Not a thing. They are for my son. Its the first thing he plays with after every Sunday school lesson so I set out to find some from Santa this past Christmas but he said all the ones in the store were crap (pardon the tone). So I did the hip and green thing and purchased these on etsy for $14. They're wood and made in America. Can't beat that.

I hope you enjoyed this week's post and have a fabulous weekend! Have any exciting plans or projects? I'll be trying Persian food for the first time tonight and hitting the Scott's Antique Show today. I can't wait to give you a full report of this world famous show right here in my own Atlanta backyard and share with you all the beautiful things on display.

Beautiful design to cap off a beautiful week...

Wow, what a week! I had no idea the response I would get from my inaugural week of blogging and I'm completely blown. away. by your love, support and kind words. I am not kidding when I tell you my hands were shaking when I hit publish so thank you for your comforting words! With all my heart I thank you.

"The only real failure in life is the failure to try"

- Sven Goran Eriksson

Now onto the business of beautiful. I have been stock piling design photos for years. Long before I knew what a blog was so I'm very eager to start sharing my favorites with you.

We will begin with my hero Pamela Pierce out of the great state of Texas. She's so good, she doesn't have an on line portfolio or presence. Lucky for us she has been published numerous times so I'm holding out hope for a book someday. Just a little teaser photo here of her sitting room that was featured in Veranda. I'm saving up for a big post but had to share because I covet her style and I absolutley love the draping of the bookshelves. Very dramatic coming from a self-confessed drama queen when it comes to design. I wish I had a wall of bookshelves to experiment with this look. I would choose an inexpensive burlap, maybe even stencil some sort of design on it and finish the look with some thick rope for tie backs. Dare to dream.

Image via Cote de Texas

And since we're on the topic of draping bookshelves (and you thought I was crazy), here is another shot from a Southern Accents show house by Monique Gibson that's forever been engrained in my design mind since 2000.

I love the pewter color (all the rage today) of the drapes with the red and white but I have to say I don't think I would of draped the patio doors. I think it takes away from the stars of the show, but that's just me. I will say this particular show house had some very hip styling including the all white covered books you see here. If I can find the shot of the hydrangeas spilling out of the fireplace or the hundreds of Campbell soup cans perfectly lined up in the kitchen ala sleeping with the enemy, I'll post. It was neat to see that sort of make believe styling element throughout a show house. Can't say I've seen that since.

image via Cote de Texas

I was on fire for this photo for weeks. This was an awesome before and after post of a guest house for rent in Texas and the creativity of this designer is simply amazing starting with the map on the track that covers the television (I wish!). You see this around now with all the flat screens but I think the clean lines of the track hardware and how the map is mounted with the metal corners rock. I adore painted floors and I appreciated the slightly different approach/pattern here. The texture of the walls with the ceiling, the books filling up the inside of the fireplace, all genius. The lantern is great, the oversized urn with those branches, the medley of antlers hanging up high, I could go on and on. Wait until you see the rest of the house tour here! You will go crazy over the attention to detail.

Image via Madeline Stuart

I'm forever telling myself that good design is all about layers and how the eye moves over a room. I think this photo epitomizes that. For me it starts front and center like a series of steps with the rug and hand-forged table and then the settee and pillow mix and then the bed, bolster and lamps and finally, the grand finale, the simple iron corona and drapes above the bed. Simple yet totally dramatic. I actually called Madeline Stuart's design firm about where I could purchase this iron piece and no big surprise, it was custom. Boo hoo. So I'm going to try and work my magic with a family friend who owns a forge factory in Michigan and see about getting some made for us. If not, we can experiment with other options to achieve the same type of look.

Image via Veranda

And lastly my "dream dining room" this photo was appropriately titled. I don't know why this one of all the hundreds but this is IT. I've never been a fan of the oval dining table but when you layer it like this and gather ten chairs around, I imagine a family all breaking bread and toasting to life and think that's what its all about.

If I were a style of chair, no doubt I'd be this one. I always come back to this French Louis XVI chair covered in raffia. I appreciate the worn leather on the seats and I rarely like leather on furniture. It always feels cold to me unless its highly distressed, creamy white or vintage looking. I'm a slave to symmetry so the two slipcovered servers and wall art are perfect except I'd probably choose a painted or dark wood cabinet for practicality sake and to off set the fabric on the table but nevertheless the scale and balance are perfect. Notice the rope tying up the chandelier and how low the chandy hovers over the table. Shocker, love that too.

I hope you enjoyed this first taste of my design file photos and found some elements that speak to your aesthetic. Maybe you inherited Grandma's dining set and aren't that wild about it? Insert the leafs and "drama drape" some inexpensive muslin over the top of it. Draping bookcases to much of a risk for you? Consider framing an entry inside your home with drapes and tying it back to one side. Have a guest bed that's been missing a headboard? Do a search on coronas and create an instant focal point with some sheers on the wall above it. You could even use a decorative hook or small shelf but most importantly have fun, applaud your efforts and share with the rest of us.

I hope you are enjoying a peaceful Sunday. Have a wonderful week! Cheers!

xoxo, Jennifer

100 reasons to shop your neighborhood Goodwill...

Welcome back! Breathing a small sigh of relief over the initial jitters of my first blog post but man was it so worth it! Your support and sweet comments left me speechless and aglow. I danced a little jig in the kitchen, had a moment for Mom and here I am, right back at it.

So I spend a lot of time at my neighborhood Goodwill store. Most of the time, its me rolling up, unloading the latest rejects and driving on to the next errand. But every now and then I treat myself to a park it and peek inside because there is nothing better than the anticipation of the unknown when ones in the mood. Take yesterday for example. I ran in with the intention of finding old book pages for a "Happy Easter" sign I'm working on and found myself rushing from section to section cursing "why didn't you just grab a cart Jen?"

This jacket instantly caught my eye just hanging there out in the open with all kinds of people around it. Are you kidding me?! I gave it the once over and read the tag...

I have no idea who Vertigo is but it looked quality and said Paris so its COMING home with me for $5.59! I think it will look stellar with the $5 tank my friend Sheri scored for me at Target, don't you? A pair of jeans and some tan boots and I'm thinking hot damn how do I get back to Paris? Or dressed up over a nude dress and sparkly hand bag. We're going to have a lot of fun together, Vertigo and me.

After I cruised through the "wares" secion and grabbed this great little decor rocking chair for my daughter's dolls ($2.92) and plucked a hard-cover Martha Stewart book for $2.50 (because you can never have enough Martha) full of beautiful photographs, projects and ideas. She'll come in handy for us come holiday time. I discovered a pair of cheetah leggings for my daughter at a mere $2.60. The rule of cheetah print applies in both fashion and home decor. It acts as a neutral and goes with everything!

Then it was onto shoes and probably my most favorite find of the day. Good-as-new Steve Madden heels that have vintage wannabe written all over them. How fun are these with a full skirt or peeking out under some jeans with a flouncy blouse? Every time I look at them I can't help but sing Taste of Honey's Boogie Oogie Oogie. Get down, do a twirl...

And lastly I wrapped her up with this nautical inspired skirt for $4.59 which will look smashing with another season of stripes this Summer.

Yesterday's sweep got me thinking about all the finds I have around my house and all the other great reasons to shop Goodwill. Its good for your pocketbook, the local economy, the environment and most importantly the people that work there. Many are down on their luck or have a minor handicap but want to work so why not show your support? Have no shame and shop away because its a win win for everybody. The rush of finding a gem for a small fraction of the price far outweighs paying retail and buyer's remorse.

"Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the streets. Fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening."
-Coco Chanel

The Goodwill is also a great place to repurpose frames vs. the high cost of custom. Just remember to take your print with you if you can. Its much more cost effective to purchase an unsavory looking print housed inside a decent frame into a frame shop and have them reassemble it all for you with a custom matte of your choice.

Take this first example. I purchased these vintage flash cards from a favorite little etsy shop of mine. I thought they would look great in a child's bedroom or playroom and can you believe I actually found two frames perfect to fit them? I ripped out some old map pages for the background and voila, a pair of insta art.

I needed a square frame for my son's first Kindergarten art project at school, which I found to be very impressive for a five-year-old (insert big smile from proud mom here). I think I paid two bucks for it. I lightly distressed the frame and used some vintage script paper I covet for the background. Feeling like a super Mom already!

I'm yet to accomplish the task with this frame I picked up for my daughter's room. I'm a sucker for anything with vintage script on it (entire post on this soon to follow) and this grabbed my attention for $2.52. I'm going to cut out the center picture and replace it with some burlap and stencil "You Are My Sunshine" on it. I gave my daughter the middle name Sunshine as well and have yet to work it into her decor.

And I could dedicate an entire post to embellishing unsightly frames like my daughter and I did here with seashells. I squirted the glue, she sprinkled the shells we collected from Captiva Island and Mom's feeling pretty super again! And she loves to tell everyone she made it..."I made this, I really did!"

And lastly some other great scores from my neighborhood Goodwill. A French inspired wicker side table. It was slightly damaged but nothing a piece of burlap and cut glass from the frame shop can't hide. Want to take it one step further...stencil something special on the burlap, like a significant number, symbol or monogram.

You can still see the price, a whopping $3.23 I think.

These chairs from an older version of my dining room were probably my best score. They were a highly unpleasant aqua, teal, magenta fabric but I knew right away from the lines they were either Lee or Hickory Chair. My eye was right! At $42 a piece I could barely stand myself. I recovered them in a stripe fabric I found in Joanne's under "suiting" fabrics which is a fraction of the cost of home upholstery and holds up well. So make a note to peek there when fabric shopping (and double bonus if you have a coupon). All the expense was in having them reupholstered but still 30 to 40 percent of what they would of cost retail.
But like most furniture in my home, its always on the move. I sold them in my antique booth I use to merchandise. I'm sure someday I'll regret it but that's the life and times of a designer, always changing, always rearranging. I know they went to a happy home and that's always worth it.

And that concludes this post. I hope you have a very happy hump day and thanks for stopping by! I can't WAIT to hear what you find at your neighborhood second-hand store. I just know it will bring you joy.

xoxo, Jennifer
