On the road with j.sho

Hi friends! It's been a wild couple of weeks and its only getting wilder. I'm sure you can relate.

As I type, boxes upon boxes of Christmas decorations are piled high on my dining room table with no live tree in sight. However, I refuse to get stressed out about the holidays and all the madness that comes with. I've got a best friend at home grateful for her next breath, the anniversary of a fallen hero from High School approaching, a dear friend, wife and mother who passed last January to pray for and lanterns to light in honor of Lily, our 11-year-old neighbor, fighting for her life. Stress and holiday decor seem so trivial and can most definitely wait.

Instead I'm making time for lunch dates, holiday get-togethers, birthday parties and baby showers. The season of yes!  Embrace the chaos. Celebrate the moments. We can all take a long nap in January when its over.

If Mom's village doesn't make it out this year, she'll understand. She'd rather me continue to hang on my child's every word, listening, being present, avoiding the distractions as I have been trying much harder to do as of late. Ending the work day at three - end of story. Celebrating those magic moments that only a childhood Christmas brings because Lord knows the days of Santa and "Elfy"are numbered. :-(

When I wrote the title for this post (I do it backwards, title first, body second - weird), I intended on taking you through the projects I've been working on over the last month. From Alabama to Atlanta to Florida (road warrior!) but we've got plenty of time for that. Instead a sweet reminder, from your fellow fan cheerleader, to exhale and remember why we're here...for family, for friends, for some good madness. Don't let the tide take ya over!

I guess the title does have some relevance. I am on a plane this weekend, back home, to celebrate above said friend's 40th birthday! I am counting down the minutes to hug her and her family. They need our prayers. She and I, thick as thieves since the third grade. Double bonus, I'll be spending a night with all my MSU roommates for our annual holiday chow down throw down. I've missed a few over the years and am grateful to have both this weekend. There will be a lot of tears, a lot of laughs and a lot of calories.

one of our classic, set the timer, group picture attempts

I promise when I return we'll get back to the business of design. And oh do I have a 2013 in store for you my pretties! I'll bring you up to speed on some exciting projects I've been blessed with, a gorgeous holiday home tour and ultimately get around to some holiday decorating at mi casa. Inspire you with some new twists and turns perhaps? Never been an advent calendar kind of family but hey, we'll give it a go...

A thankful heart

Wishing you and yours a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday! Here is my public expression of thanks and gratitude to you for loving the road and to my amazing and sweet-as-can-be clients for allowing me to be a part of their most precious possessions: their home and family!

Dear Lord,
Thank you for all the joy and wonderful friends you have brought into my life because of this blog. Thank you for giving me the courage to start it and speak it on my own freewill. And thank you Lord for blessing me with good health so that I may continue to do my part in making the lives of others more joyful and beautiful! You are my rock and savior.

Amen.

See you back here real soon!

Dream on!

At the beginning of the year I wrote the road's most popular post Daydreaming HERE where I listed goals for another exciting new year. I was inspired after reading a statistic on the importance of writing them down, revisiting the list throughout the year and how very few people actually do this. But the tiny four percent that do, see results. Hmmm, interesting? Well I'm flat out ecstatic to tell you that one of the goals...

"I dream of my work being published someday, anywhere, I don't care"

has come true!

(And just in the nick of time...is next week really Thanksgiving?!).

Next month when I'm standing in the check out line, I can pick up Atlanta Magazine and read all about  Lisa and I's kitchen design inside! Can you even stand it???

I. could. cry. And God knows I will.

TODAY is the photo shoot and we've been driving all over town picking up items in hopes to perfectly style the shoot and make it come alive on those full color pages for you. Styling for a shoot is very important (and a lot of work).  I cannot wait to fill you in and share with you everything I learn today because this is a whole new world for me team! I'm chomping at the bit to watch it all go down.

I will tell you I've watched and read A LOT of my friend's work published and it is absolutely THE BEST feeling! I'm just having a hard time believing its our turn this time around.

Thank you all for loving the kitchen like you have! Its been so fun watching it take on a life of its own on Pinterest. Thank you to Lisa Mowry, our fairy Godmother and rock star producer! Thank you to our clients for blessing us with the perfect project. And thank you for reading and loving the road. I COULD NOT wait to share it with you all - truly the very best part!

Take one thing from today's post, DON'T EVER STOP DREAMING! If it can happen to little ole Jenny Hehl from little ole Flat Rock, it can happen for you too (insert Ellie Goulding's "Anything Can Happen" song here). I'll be blaring it on my way over to the shoot this morning.

Inspiration via Scott Antique Market

One of the benefits of living in the design mecca Southeast, is attending Scott Antique Market. In which candidly, we probably take for granted. The show takes place the second full weekend of every month and attracts dealers and buyers from all over the country. Every time I go, I ask myself, "why aren't you coming here every month?". You just never know what goodies and GREATS you will uncover, or one-of-a-kind finds you can re-image into masterpieces. For example, this past visit, I came across an old iron balcony railing, in the shape of an arc, and immediately thought, imagine it topped with marble as an entry table?

I brought a client this last hunt and we had a ball searching for items on our punch out list:

console table
ottoman/cocktail table
lamps
mirror
kitchen table centerpiece
pillows
fabric
accessories
hide rug

Loved this round cocktail table. LOVE.

Contemplated this old tool box for a dining table centerpiece but determined we need to bring in another finish/texture, like basket weave or iron.

Can you hear the sobs? That's me boo hooing because I didn't buy this bench! If you know me, you know I'll come across a lovely image from a magazine or blog and it stays stuck in my head for years! Seeing this bench conjured up this particular BH&G shot I've had saved in my under "holiday decorating" since 2003...

Moving on, these definitely qualify for smokin hot...

Standing nearby was more wonderful foxed mirror, this time in the shape of a screen. Imagine this beauty as a backdrop, centered behind a lovely pair of chairs and center table, artwork along its perimeter???

I had a recent inquiry into designing a lake house space, so it too was on my mind...and wondered if they would like something like this?

Yes, the next piece is available in pairs! They belong to a new dealer at the show and I'm hoping they did well so they will return. If not, I've got their card.

They also were the owners of this piece, a favorite of my clients and definite possibility for the foyer space.

These could be fun, all cleaned up and ready to rock...

More sobs from camp Jen...I could of at least inquired about the price...what is my problem? I would of loved these homeys to come home with me.

These made it in the truck. We loved the caramel colored patina on them for my client. Not quite sure where they will go yet, but I was reminded of the saying..."if you love them, get them, you'll find a place eventually". Whoever said that is genius.

These caught my eye. There's something aeronautical/masculine about them. I think they'd look great with a round table.

These are everywhere at Scotts and they also come in the form of a light fixture, which is fun.

The mega-talented Erika Powell, floated one in the fireplace at last Summer's Coastal Living Show House, which I'm SO going to use in my own fireplace next Spring/Summer...

I picked up three of these crates for $12 a piece to use as shelving in the beach house bath.

These white floating shelves were temporary and its time for them to fly...especially when a towel goes rolling off into the...whoops.

I think the gray, beat up patina of the crates are the perfect compliment and add some crust to the bathroom. You know how I love crust, or should I say "organic". My new buzz word.

Here are two more excellent examples of how you can put $12 crates to work in your home...

very nice.

Love the accordion lamp hanging out in this picture. I don't know what it is about accordion lights that I love so much, but I'm hooked. Anyone catch the two accordion light pendants hanging over the kitchen island of, I think it was, in House Beautiful??? Haven't had time to go back and study/research those yet.

I had lake house on my mind again when I snapped a shot of this chair, lake house and a little Alice in Wonderland tea party.

I like mixing in a one off chair like so, with other upholstered pieces short, tall, big, small.  This chair would also look great with a slipcover hanging off its bottom.

If ever in need of a crusty pale patina'd lamp, here's your man!

Table and gorgeous floor lamps! The blue one, second from right, gets my vote.

Time to pause for station identification...the food at Scotts is most definitely part of the show. The Greek food in the back corner of the North building oh my! I can't seem to ever tear myself away to try anything else, and there is a lot of great chow walking by. This time it was the tabouleh, the cowboy caviar and the EGGPLANT up to bat. The eggplant - TO DIE. We could not stop eating it or talking about it!

Meet George of "Pedestal". George is a local guy, from LaGrange, and had a beautiful booth.  We stood around and thought lonnnng and hard over this mirror for her foyer but in the end had to pass, because we really want a table in the foyer, first and foremost, and this guy was just one foot too big to do both. Darn.

Great lamps by George, and are you ready for this, $295 for the PAIR! A steal when you consider what you pay for a lamp shade alone.

In love with these rugs. Logged for future reference.

In both color ways...

This next picture doesn't quite do the lantern justice. It was enormous! And that yoke! I love a good yoke. Again, logged for future design plans.

We both wanted the gothic styled door but at one G flat (no need to worry, my accountant handles that...can you name that tune?), what's a girl to do but admire and compliment the owner on such a lovely vignette: the chairs, rug, door, panels, lamp...

If only you had a twin to go with! A steal at $149.

Just goes to show, ain't nothing like the real thing baby, when I look at this photo. This table was beyond fabulous but alas, my photog skills are not. You'll just have to trust me on this one. Stellar.

The best thing about snapping photos at the show, is you go back and see things again for the first time, like the starburst mirror,  top left corner. Aren't you pretty. I took the photo for all that gorgeous greenery (and the pair of white urns filled with silver ornaments). I cannot wait to get out there and clip away the magnolias for Christmas.

These three would make a great trio somewhere,  even just one by itself in a nondescript, unexpected part of your home...

(chaLahcdesigns.com is responsible for their beauty).

The lamps were a YES for my client. Thinking a dark shade maybe? Or something unexpected. Still working through that.

So do you wanna know what I bought? Nothing too exciting. The three crates, like I mentioned earlier and this oversized round tray for $38. Yeah, no idea where or what I'm going to do with it, but that no name genius we mentioned earlier, that always peeps into my head..."if you love it, buy it" came calling.

If you are local and never been to Scotts, you must go and to my out of town friends, its so worth the trip! Now I will say, there are months better than others, but you didn't hear it from me. ;-) Think April.

Have a great week you all! I'm off to Birmingham today to meet with a fun new family and help them design a kitchen/family room functional and comfortable for nine. Bring the noise I say.

-Tuesday its downtown to ADAC to explore more fabric options and be inspired by the beautiful showrooms.

-Wednesday will be a down day - hah, yeah right. I'll be coming off a late night at the Georgia Dome watching my beloved Michigan State Spartans basketball team! Thank you to my husband for surprising me with row one seats, via our good friends from East Lansing. I've never sat in the first row EVER in my life for anything I cared about as much as my school! Phantom of the Opera, surrre but my Spartonians? Tommy Izzo?!

(simmer down Jen).

Thursday is another big day and it just dawned on me I haven't shared the big news with you all. Awww hells bells, I promise I'll spill it by Wednesday. And I hate being that girl by the way, ohhh I have a big surprise in store but wait - can't share. THEN WHY EVEN MENTION IT?

Finally Friday its off to Lakewood 400 Antique Show as we only checked hide rug, lamps and accessories off that long list up top. Much more to do! Time and money are running out...chop-chop.

Sophia Sunshine Seven

Time continues to fly by...here we are celebrating our baby girl's 7th birthday today as we continue to do our best and soak up every minute we can with our children. The ever present reminder in the back of our minds..."it goes by so fast". If I had a dollar for every time I heard a parent say that...but thank you! Thank you for constantly reminding us younger-ish parents of that fact.

I came across an idea on Pinterest to "fill your child's room with balloons to wake up to on their birthday". I thought HOW SWEET! However, there are a lot of sweet ideas on Pinterest in theory, how realistic are all of them? I decided to go for it and test it out.

Did you know Party City sells "air extend" for an extra $1.85 per dozen of balloons? It makes the balloons last for an entire 24 hours. Therefore you can plan ahead and hide them in your husband's closet while they are at school!

Balloons can make quite a bit of noise, when you're trying to shove two dozen of them into your sleeping beauty's room. My suggestion, add them two and three at a time and softly place them on the ceiling, all the while, praying to the balloon Gods that one of them doesn't POP in the process.

The result, a very happy birthday girl morning..."Mommy look! The birthday fairy came to my room last night!!" Complete with squeals and exaggerated hand gestures.

Last weekend, we threw a small birthday party for Soph and her little neighborhood friends that live nearby. I had about two days to whip it up. Here's what I came up with...

Guests were greeted by the spooky No. 7 (five minute job with the black cardboard I was suppose to use to make the bats. Once again, that idea gets pushed back another Halloween).

I threw together a party table with black tulle from Walmart and tied together all the paper ornaments I had from last year, ran upstairs and dropped them out my bathroom window.

Put together "witch broom" treat bags with brown paper bags, sticks from the yard and twine.

Tried to order a cake, to make life easier, but missed the deadline. So I purchased three tiers of ascending cake pans and made a pretty tasty spice cake, I might add. I tried to use the Pinterest idea of wiping the frosting with a paper towel to make it look like fondant. Hah, yeah right. I guess I don't have the knack for that skill. I finished it off by shoving plastic spider rings randomly all over the cake and seven black candles in the shape of a seven.

All kinds of grand plans to paint pumpkins, bob for apples, ghost hunt in the park, but in the end it was paint the pumpkins, cover the garage walls with chalk art, hide and seek in the alley and a dance party under the disco ball. I'm a believer in leaving it up to the imagination of the children. Like we had to day in and day out as children. And in the end it works, I peeked out the mud room door to find each one of them taking turns performing dance moves for a very supportive audience. ;-))))

The birthday week culminated with a huge pull of candy last night begging.

Like Mother, like Daughter. I loved being a Gypsy so much I was one twice! What's not to love about lots of jewelry and make up? Mom had covered a small softball with aluminum foil that I carried as my crystal ball. I was looking closely at this picture last night when I noticed the gold bracelet on my wrist that belong to Mom. I still have it and wear it! As a matter of fact, I think I'll put it on today. Sweet memories and tokens that keep us connected to our loved ones makes the heart feel great. xoxoxo

Hope you all had a wonderful Halloween!
